About the Centre

The Institute of European Studies of the Université Saint-Louis - Brussels is a teaching and research institute. It brings together teachers and researchers active in the field of European studies. Located in the heart of the capital of Europe, it benefits from the contributions of practitioners, decision-makers and senior officials of the European institutions, both in its teaching and training programs and in its research activities.

The Institute participates in various international research networks and has developed faculty exchanges with several foreign universities. It also welcomes visiting researchers from European and non-European universities every year. The research conducted within the Centre is marked by interdisciplinarity. It deals with European governance, European citizenship and the constitutionalisation of the Union, European defence, security policies, global governance, especially environmental governance, and regulation.

The past year has been marked from the point of view of research activities by the launch in September 2022 of the EUNMUTE Project within the framework of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, which will last until 2025. The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is part of the European Commission's Erasmus+ program, which aims to foster excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies, as well as dialogue between universities, civil society and policy makers. It is an interdisciplinary platform that brings together experts in European Union politics and law. From the point of view of the dynamics set in motion this year, the Centre of Excellence offers a prestigious label to the IEE and allows to mobilize many members of the Institute around a common project and numerous activities related to research and public debate. The EUNMUTE project has also already given rise to research initiatives which have resulted in the submission this year of a collective ARC project ("Action de Recherche Concertée") which also brings together several members of the IEE around issues initiated within the Centre of Excellence.

The past year was also marked by the award of several important European individual grants: an ERC obtained by Rocco BELLANOVA on the EU and digital issues (DATAUNION), a Jean Monnet Chair obtained by Sophie JACQUOT on the EU and gender inequalities (EUGENDERING), and a Jean Monnet Chair attributed to Amandine ORSINI on the EU and environmental issues (EUGLOBALGREEN) Agathe PIQUET also obtained a F.R.S.-FNRS research mandate for her research project on the EU and the fight against environmental crime.
